Military and Veterans Benefits in St. Louis
Past or present members of the military may be eligible to receive financial assistance from their military branch or service-connected associations to subsidize the cost of tuition for that member or their dependents. Active duty members and retirees should contact their branch’s payroll department for information about financial assistance and relief societies within their branches. U.S. veterans are eligible to participate in the U.S. Department of Veterans’ Affairs Educational Benefits Programs. The Department of Education has published a brochure that explains in detail the federal student loan benefits that are available to veterans.
Getting Started
We require that you meet with the VA Representative every semester.
Tuition Assistance
Active-duty, Reserve, and National Guard members may qualify for tuition assistance at SLCHC. Military personnel may apply through their base education officer or other standard methods. For more information, contact an Admissions Advisor or the SLCHC VA Representative.
Current Benefits
SLCHC participates in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Educational Benefits Programs. Veterans Representatives coordinates enrollment verification with the Office of the Registrar and submits the appropriate forms. Current VA programs are as follows:
- Chapters 30, 31, 35, 1606, 1067
- Post -911 GI Bill (Ch. 33)
- The Yellow Ribbon Program
GI Bill® Benefits
SLCHC is proud to offer VA benefits-approved education programs under the Post 9/11 and Yellow Ribbon, Montgomery GI Bill and VA Voc-Rehab. Reserve and National Guard members may also qualify based on their own GI Bill guidelines. Eligibility and disbursement amounts will vary depending on a number of factors, including your term of military service, years of service, etc.
GI Bill® is a registered trademark of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). More information about education benefits offered by VA is available at the official U.S. government Web site at www.benefits.va.gov/gibill.
Note: As a student at SLCHC, many veteran students are able to cover all of their costs with GI Bill benefits and the use of the Yellow Ribbon Program if qualified.
After your provisional acceptance, a SLCHC Admissions Advisor will refer you to the VA department at SLCHC. There, you will provide the necessary information to complete your benefits paperwork.
Yellow Ribbon
SLCHC is approved as a Yellow Ribbon School. The good news about this is that there is little to nothing that you will have to do. Post 9/11 benefits are capped by the Department of Veteran’s Affairs. If your tuition exceeds this cap, then your automatic Yellow Ribbon benefit will assist with the balance. The VA and SLCHC split the remaining tuition amount equally, effectively alleviating the burden on the veteran. SLCHC has capped Yellow Ribbon benefits at $2000 per year.
All SLCHC programs are approved for education
benefits by the Department of Veteran Affairs.
Military Benefits FAQ's
The GI Bill provides generous education benefits to SLCHC students. Undergraduates may qualify for half, three-quarter, or full-time benefits. Note: Half-time benefits are qualified as 12 Credits per semester, which is considered full-time student status at SLCHC.
After you have started your degree program and developed your personalized Degree Plan, the VA department at SLCHC will certify your program of study to the VA. This is done by the first week of the semester/term. You should receive your first benefit payment within 5-8 weeks after a certification is submitted. First, you must apply to SLCHC and be admitted. In addition, you will need to have received notice of your VA education benefit eligibility. The SLCHC VA Representative can help you complete the necessary steps for attendance certification.
Military experience/credit for training may be awarded and is based on evaluation of the training by the Dean of Education and respective Program Director. A full transcript review is always required, as well as an assessment to measure your applied education and compatibility with SLCHC’s learning environment. If you have served in any branch of the military, you should be able to obtain a military transcript.
Post 9/11 (CH 33) benefits are paid differently than older chapters. Based on your entitlement—which is factored from your length of qualifying active-duty service—a percentage of your tuition and fees will be sent directly to the school. 100 percent entitlement will cover your tuition and fees completely each term you have remaining entitlement. You will also receive a monthly stipend sent directly to you if you are not on active duty or the spouse of an active-duty service member utilizing a transfer of entitlement. This payment is 50 percent of the amount paid to a student attending an on-campus school, multiplied by your rate of pursuit. You will also receive a book stipend once each term up to the capped amount for your entitlement.
