Resume Tips and Tricks

The resume is one of your most important documents. Here are a few tips to help you curate a resume that will help you land your dream job:

  • Include ‘buzzwords” and “keywords” from the job description. This allows the ATS software to pick up your resume and get it to an actual human to review.
  • Use strong action verbs for your first word in your bullet points, like “designed”, “managed”, or “increased”. Click here to check out the action verbs Harvard recommends.
  • Mentioning action verbs, remember to be consistent with tense. If you currently work at a position, be sure all verb tenses are present. If it is a previous position, be sure all verb tenses are past.
  • Constantly edit and tailor your resume to the job of which you are applying. Remember to look for those keywords in job descriptions- the things they are looking for in a candidate. Tailor your resume to showcase your skills that would be applicable for that role.
  • Limit your resume to one page. Be detailed, but concise.
  • Do not lie! Potential employers can verify dates, job titles, and your education. Being dishonest will likely get you removed from potential candidates. Use your honest employment and education history to your advantage and showcase what you offer to an employer.
  • Ask for help! If you are having trouble articulating what you want to say, or if you would like us to look over your resume, email us at careerservices@slchc.edu
